Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

I don’t know if I’m over-sensitive or just old-fashioned; probably a bit of both.  I’ve stopped watching regular television because I am offended and tired of the advertisements.  I know money must be made and it’s done by selling advertising, but fortunately I have a choice so I’ve made it.  In place of TV I’m watching videos.  Thankfully I have a closet full that will keep me entertained for some time to come.  Tonight I watched a wonderful old movie titled “A Man Called Peter.”  It’s the story of the life of Peter Marshall, a Scottish preacher.   Here is one of my favorite scenes as Peter Marshall preaches on what Heaven will be like – James 4:14.  Watch that scene on YouTube here .

Rev. Marshall is addressing a military group and gives this message instead of one he had previously planned.  It is a message that needs repeating today.

That is just one of the scenes of the movie that I like, but my most favorite is when Catherine Marshall accompanies Rev. Marshall and two other young people to a youth rally.  The crowd is not attentive to Christian values, and they poke fun at Rev. Marshall’s attempts to tell them about Jesus.  The other two young people who were supposed to speak were so intimidated by the crowd that they refused to speak.  Not Catherine!  She gets up and gives the most wonderful speech to those people.  She completely turns the mood of the crowd around so Rev. Marshall can then carry on with the meeting.  I think this is was endeared him to Catherine because the love story between the two of them is sweet and wonderfully encouraging following that meeting.  Here is an interview of their son Peter Jon and an earlier interview with Catherine herself.

I was so happy to find the transcript of Catherine Marshall’s Speech.  This too is one that young women need to hear today.

Peter Marshall (May 27, 1902 – January 26, 1949) was a Scots-American preacher, pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC and twice appointed as Chaplain of the United States Senate.

Watching the movie and listening to Catherine Marshall’s speech made me want to write a blog and tell others about it too.  Not just the movie, but the thought behind it… that God is sovereign – one who has supreme power and authority – and He is to be honored, glorified and worshiped.
